III. Course Description and Purpose

This course is designed to provide a foundation for students to study math at the high school and college levels. Algebra 1 aims to develop mathematical fluency in students as they learn to work with variables and understand the rules for solving equations. The course covers a wide range of topics including number theory, inequalities, graphing using the rectangular coordinate system, factoring, and solving quadratic equations . Emphasis is placed on developing a comprehension of numbers, graphs, and equations, essential for success in higher-level mathematics. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence needed to excel in Algebra 2 and other more advanced math courses.

Quizzes: 30%

Participation

Participation counts for 15% of the overall grade. By default students start with 100/100 points in their participation grade category. Students that speak out of turn following a warning are liable to be penalized with points taken away from their participation grade. Students can also earn points for exceptional behavior (incites, helping their fellow peers, significant contributions to class discussion, etc.).

Assignments

Homework is after every class most of the time. It is meant to provide practice for the regular quizzes.

Quizzes

Quizzes are given regularly and check for student understanding of key concepts covered in class. They are a significant portion of the grade. Good performance on these quizzes is crucial to performing well in the class.

Food and Beverages

No food. The only food/beverage item that is acceptable in my class is a water bottle.

Technology

All devices (cell phones, tablets, and laptops) are by default to be put away and remain stored during class. Violators will be penalized according to the student behavioral handbook.

Attendance

Be on time. Students who are habitually late will be and/or absent will get behind and therefore their grade will suffer. Attending lecture is another key indicator of good performance.

Academic Integrity, Plagiarism and Cheating

Academic integrity is essential for the development of a climate of mutual trust in a community where honesty and respect are the norm. Violators will receive the full penalty outlined in the student behavioral handbook.
